BURBERRY; An epic re-invention of the Iconic luxury brand
Are you curious about the recent change in the Burberry logo by popular in-house designer, Riccardo Tisci? well I am! Let me tell you why.
After barely 5 months as creative director, the Italian born designer was given 4 weeks to re-brand the Burberry fashion house; 4 weeks!! Paired with the talented art director and graphic designer Peter Saville, the duo brought in some kick-ass revolution, developing a fresh and young look to the brand’s new identity which Tisci posted on the official Burberry Instagram and Twitter pages. The new monogram pattern features the brand Founder, Thomas Burberry’s initials "TB" interlocking on a red and honey background in the most spunky way.
The new logo has taken the entire fashion world by storm! There are online debates and discussions over the new monogram and its dramatic design. Several fashion critics cited that the new branding was a landmark shift since Burberry's last re-invention which happened over 20 years ago by Tisci’s predecessor, Fabien Baron in 1999.
The classic 1908 black-and-white logo and the new Thomas Burberry monogram were chosen with the main aim of fusing the past with the present.
Several fashion critics have been wondering whether the Burberry logo was necessary. According to some fashion sources, the new logo came as a wake-up call after many luxury brands like, Dior, Fendi and Gucci had undergone “logo modifications” to interest the millennials. There were recent media reports about Burberry burning down unsold clothes which were worth millions to safeguard themselves from being forged. could this explain the change? There are other critics who feel that Tisci inentionally did this to flaunt off his creativity before his runway debut at the London Fashion Week on 17th September.
Another “feather on the cap moment” for Riccardo Tisci was Styling the multi-platinum, Grammy award music Icon Beyoncé with a bespoke Burberry bodysuit, cropped jacket, and thigh-high boots for her On the Run II world tour. The singer was sporting this classic yet chic look at the New Jersey stage. Interestingly, Burberry’s classic check pattern was more than evident in Beyoncé’s evening look and it didn’t take much time for the critics to figure out the ulterior motive of the brand.
Fans took to Instagram to post controversial comments about Beyoncé’s look that evening. While some loved it, others simply disregarded it and went off to say that Burberry was rapidly losing its essence.
Tisci's attempt to blend vintage styles with modern trends has so far received wavering responses failing to appeal to many.
Personally, I do love some of their the modern designs like the new Burberry leggings and the cranberry red No.77 dress with the vintage check pattern. We know that for over a century, the British fashion house has been seen designing high end fashion featuring its iconic check pattern.. so my question is, will the new monogram give the same luxurious and high class feel to the brand? its a hard one to beat.
